Yes, as execrable as some of the pledge programming is (although the real sin is how much air time it takes up), it is necessary to remind "viewers like you" that the actual good stuff on PBS -"Masterpiece," "American Experience," the KQED-produced science program "Quest" - takes money that the network or the local affiliate can't obtain by selling depilatory cream. Of course, the bottom line is that PBS can't really operate the way the other networks do because it is a nonprofit organization. Good luck trying to find out what's on tonight. You've heard of the information highway? Some channels' home pages seem to be conceived as information parking lots. The websites may be navigable, but, really, life is too short. And once PBS has done that, perhaps it might want to put some of its affiliates' websites on diets - some of those sites, reflective of the fact that PBS is still partially tethered to a kind of kumbaya mentality, are afflicted with terminal TMI. Unlike commercial channels, PBS can't depend on an extensive advertising campaign with signs on the sides of buses touting " Yan Can Cook." at the beginning and end of many shows, in order to cue what's airing later on.
